third space (n.)
the social surroundings separate from the two usual environments: home, the first place, and work, the second. cafés, clubs, libraries, bookstores, parks. in the great good place (1989), the sociologist ray oldenburg argues that third places matter: for civil society, for belonging, for the feeling of a sense of place.
Your bed has an address. So does your desk. Most lives stop there.
The third space is the other one: the corner spot that knows your order, the bench where your people end up on a Sunday, the room you walk into without a reason and leave with one.
Cities used to be full of them. Lisbon still has a few. Ours is a warehouse on the Tejo, and it is not programmed: the room is set, you make it a place.
